Srivatsa Ramaswami

30+ Years with Krishnamacharya Vinyasa Krama Authority Author, Scholar, Teacher

Srivatsa Ramaswami is one of the most respected living students of Sri T. Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga. He studied with Krishnamacharya for over 30 years in Chennai, India, longer than any other Western or Indian student who has taught publicly in the West.

Ramaswami is the author of several foundational texts including The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga, Yoga for the Three Stages of Life, and his translation and commentary on the Yoga Sutras. His approach preserves the full breadth of Krishnamacharya’s teaching, not merely the asana practice but the complete yogic system including pranayama, dharana, and philosophical study.

Eric Martin and Rachel Cieslewicz, co-founders of YogaSoul and both World Yoga Federation Grandmasters, have studied Vinyasa Krama directly under Ramaswami. YogaSoul’s lineage traces directly to Krishnamacharya through both founders, each holding authorization to teach Ashtanga’s primary and intermediate series. Hosting this intensive was a natural expression of YogaSoul’s deep commitment to lineage-based practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

About This Program

What is Vinyasa Krama Yoga?

Vinyasa Krama is the traditional yoga system taught by Sri T. Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga. Unlike contemporary “vinyasa flow,” Vinyasa Krama is a comprehensive methodology that systematically links breath, movement, and posture across hundreds of traditional sequences, from standing to seated to supine, in a carefully ordered progression. It is not a style, it is a complete system.

Do I need prior Vinyasa Krama experience?

No. The program was designed to welcome both dedicated practitioners and experienced yoga teachers. What was required was a sincere practice and a genuine interest in studying yoga at depth. Ramaswami was known for meeting students where they are while honoring the full rigour of the tradition.

What is the Samkhya Karika?

The Samkhya Karika by Isvarakrishna is one of the foundational texts of Indian philosophy. Samkhya provides the metaphysical framework that underlies the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the dualistic understanding of purusha (consciousness) and prakriti (nature). Studying it directly with Ramaswami, using his own translation, was a rare opportunity.

Was the program available online?

Yes. Both morning and afternoon sessions were available simultaneously online and in-person, allowing practitioners outside Salt Lake City to participate. Recordings may be available, contact us for information.

What is YogaSoul’s connection to this lineage?

Eric Martin and Rachel Cieslewicz, co-founders of YogaSoul and both World Yoga Federation Grandmasters, have studied Vinyasa Krama directly under Ramaswami. YogaSoul’s lineage traces directly to Krishnamacharya through both founders, each holding authorization to teach Ashtanga’s primary and intermediate series. Hosting this intensive was an expression of YogaSoul’s core commitment to lineage-based, authentic yoga education.

Will this program be offered again?

We hope to host Ramaswami again in the future. If you’d like to be notified when new programs are announced, please contact us or subscribe to the YogaSoul newsletter. We announce special intensives and events to our community first.
